Exciting news! The dominant mature bull rhino on the reserve is pursuing Massingita. The third of the “Lucky Five” to have arrived at the orphanage, she is now five years old - old enough to be undergoing her first oestrus. The dominant male has been seen successfully covering and hopefully mating with her.
Here’s hoping this leads to the patter of tiny (rhino sized) feet in 16-18months time!
Rhino Revolution could not be more proud or excited that one of the Lucky Five is potentially starting to breed. This is the realisation of our dreams and ethos – that rhino calves orphaned by poaching can return to the wild, as self-sustaining wild animals – and breeding to restore the numbers and genetic diversity of this iconic African species.
